The little HBCU that could! Bennett College was shooting for $5M but it raised over $8M in its determination to keep its accreditation. Way to go, Belles!
Bennett President Phyllis Worthy Dawkins announced during a press conference Monday that the college had surpassed its goal by more than $3 million. “We appreciate each and every gift that we were given, no matter how small or how large,” she said. Before the college launched its multimillion-dollar campaign, declining enrollment triggered back-to-back years of budget deficits. In late 2016, SACSCOC suspended its accreditation before moving to take it away permanently in December, citing concerns over its finances. In fiscal 2016, the college reported a net loss of $1.1 million as its net assets fell year-over-year by 12.5%, to $14.5 million.
